Folios: Swanston Street at Night / Feral Pig Hunting / Canberra Fires 2003

Swanston Street at Night
Swanston Street is a major artery in Melbourne’s CBD. During the day it is teeming with pedestrian, trams and taxis. At night it becomes a center of activity of another kind. I spent nearly a year documenting what I found interesting about this street at night, meeting people that I would probably not find there during the day. I tried to show a piece of Melbourne that most people don’t get or don’t want to see.

Feral Pig Hunting.
Feral pigs are a huge threat to the Australian ecosystem. They destroy habitat for native plants and animals. They destroy crops and vastly increase the risk of exotic diseases spreading if there were ever an outbreak. One method at attempting to eradicate these pests is sport hunting. I followed a group of “Doggers” to central NSW to see first hand what it was like.

Canberra Fires 2003
In January of 2003 the worst fires since the Ash Wednesday fires in Victoria and South Australia hit Canberra, ACT. I happened to be staying in a relatives house in the suburb Weston when the fires came over the hill behind us. What followed was to be the most impressive thing I might ever see. When it was all over somehow the fire had stopped just shy of our street. Four died and around 400 homes were lost. I photographed the aftermath in Chapman, starting only meters from our backyard.
